Why Talkshoe?

People ask why we use the Talkshoe platform rather than using asterisk.
  1. Bandwidth. Scalable from 1 to many hundreds of calls, the bandwidth doesn't depend on anyone's resources, which would be asking a lot.
  2. Doing good. Talkshoe pays a few pennies for each download and we invest 100% of this with Kiva.org, a third world microlending organization. Talkathon was started for this purpose.
  3. Automatic recording and archiving. Talkshoe allows the conference to be easily recorded and archived for easy download or streaming via a simple web page.
  4. Automatic RSS feed generation. Self evident.
  5. Part of an established community. Talkshoe has a growing community of podcast listeners, many of them in the technology field.
  6. Live stream. During the live conference, anyone can listen anonymously via the web page player with nothing to download and no registration.
  7. Single client for audio and text chat. This allows listening and asking questions or making comments without a telephone. Ideally, one can use both the text chat and the phone in order to both talk and see who is in the conference.
  8. One phone number for all shows. There are many interesting talks going on at Talkshoe, all reachable through a single phone number and distinguished by a numerical id.
Ironically, Mark Spencer, creator of asterisk has never asked me why we do not use asterisk. I think the old unix motto "the right tool for the right job" goes a long way here.
